AG speech - Port & maritime security and counter terrorism

Attorney General Philip Ruddock has released his speech addressed to the Port & Maritime Security and Counter Terrorism Summit held on 19/05/2006, Sydney.

Key issued addressed included:

threat of terrorist tactics against coastline, port or maritime interests and infrastructure;

national counter-terrorism measures including co-operative arrangements with other countries, the intelligence powers of our security agencies, and the investigative and detention powers of police;

striking a balance between the rights of the individual and the safety of the community and;

crafting anti-terrorism laws so they do not conflict with our international human rights law or our domestic human rights framework.
