Vic report calls for action on prisoner custody and transfer arrangements

The Victorian Ombudsman and Director, Police Integrity, George Brouwer, has tabled a report in Parliament on the conditions of persons in custody in Victoria.

The report calls for changes to the current transfer arrangements for persons in custody between Victoria Police and the prison system.

“Persons should not be detained in sub-standard police cells for long periods because of the lack of suitable vacancies in the prison system,” Mr Brouwer said. He pointed to a lack of basic amenities in both police and prison cells, and deficiencies in health care.
